About Ben Silbermann: Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Pinterest

Ben Silbermann (born July 14, 1982) is an American Internet entrepreneur, the co-founder and executive chairman of Pinterest, a visual discovery engine that lets users organize images, links, recipes and other things. He was born in Iowa and raised in Des Moines, is of Chinese and German descent, and is the son of ophthalmologists Jane Wang and Neil Silbermann. In 1998 he attended the Research Science Institute at MIT, graduated from Des Moines Central Academy and Des Moines Roosevelt in 1999, and graduated from Yale University in 2003 with a degree in political science. Before Pinterest, which launched in March 2010, Silbermann worked in Google's online advertising group but left after a short time to design iPhone apps with friends. When his first app, Tote, failed to gain traction, he teamed up with Evan Sharp to create a pinboard product that became Pinterest. He says its genesis was his childhood love of collecting: "Collecting tells a lot about who you are", and when he looked at the web, "there wasn't a place to share that side of who you were." Raising capital was a hurdle he approached laterally by entering the NYU Stern Business Plan Competition, whose prize was a meeting with venture capitalists.
