About Dave Thomas: Founder of Wendy's
Rex David "Dave" Thomas (July 2, 1932 to January 8, 2002) was an American businessman, philanthropist and fast-food tycoon, the founder and chief executive of Wendy's, a fast-food chain specializing in hamburgers. As the chain's spokesman he appeared in more than 800 television commercials from 1989 to 2002, more than any other company founder in television history. Thomas was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and was adopted between six weeks and six months after birth by Rex and Auleva Thomas. As an adult he became a well-known adoption advocate and founded the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. After his adoptive mother died when he was five, his father moved around the country seeking work, and Thomas spent part of his early childhood near Kalamazoo, Michigan, with his grandmother, Minnie Sinclair, whom he credited with teaching him the importance of service and of treating others with respect. At 12 he had his first job, at Regas Restaurant in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, but lost it in a dispute with his boss and vowed never to lose another job; decades later Regas hung a large autographed poster of him at its entrance, where it stayed until the restaurant closed in 2010. By 15 he was working at the Hobby House Restaurant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, owned by Phil Clauss, who became his mentor, and when his father prepared to move again he stayed in Fort Wayne and dropped out of high school to work full-time.
