About George Soros: Founder of Soros Fund Management

George Soros (born György Schwartz on August 12, 1930, in Budapest) is a Hungarian and American investor and philanthropist. As of May 2025 he has a net worth of US$7.2 billion, having donated more than $32 billion to the Open Society Foundations, of which $15 billion has already been distributed, representing 64% of his original fortune. In 2020 Forbes called him the "most generous giver" as a percentage of net worth. Soros survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary as a teenager and moved to the United Kingdom in 1947. He studied philosophy at the London School of Economics, earning a BSc in 1951 and a master's degree in 1954, and began his career in British and American merchant banks before setting up his first hedge fund, Double Eagle, in 1969. Its profits seeded Soros Fund Management in 1970, and Double Eagle was renamed Quantum Fund, the principal firm he advised; it had $12 million in assets under management at founding and $25 billion as of 2011, the majority of his net worth. He is known as "The Man Who Broke the Bank of England" for his short sale of US$10 billion of pounds sterling, which earned him a $1 billion profit during the 1992 Black Wednesday UK currency crisis. Drawing on his early studies of philosophy, Soros formulated a general theory of reflexivity. Sources: English Wikipedia (George Soros, accessed September 2026).
