About Henry Ford: Founder of the Ford Motor Company

Henry Ford (July 30, 1863 to April 7, 1947) was an American industrialist and business magnate. As founder of the Ford Motor Company he is credited as a pioneer in making automobiles affordable for middle-class Americans through the system that came to be known as Fordism, and in 1911 he was awarded a patent for the transmission mechanism used in the Ford Model T and other cars. Ford was born in a farmhouse in Greenfield Township, Michigan, and left home at 16 to find work in Detroit. Through the later 1880s he began repairing and then constructing engines, and through the 1890s he worked with a division of Edison Electric. After earlier business failures he founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903 and succeeded in building automobiles. The 1908 introduction of the Model T is credited with revolutionizing both transportation and American industry. As sole owner of the company Ford became one of the wealthiest people in the world, and he was among the pioneers of the five-day work week. His commitment to systematically lowering costs produced technical and business innovations including a franchise system that allowed dealerships across North America and in major cities on six continents. Ford's legacy is mixed. He was known for pacifism during the first years of World War I, although his company became a major weapons supplier during the war, and he promoted the League of Nations. In the 1920s, however, he promoted antisemitism through his newspaper The Dearborn Independent and the book The International Jew. Sources: English Wikipedia (Henry Ford, accessed September 2026).
