About John Jacob Astor: Fur Trade Monopolist and First US Multi-millionaire

John Jacob Astor (born Johann Jakob Astor on July 17, 1763; died March 29, 1848) was a German-born American businessman, merchant, real estate mogul and investor. He made his fortune mainly in a fur trade monopoly, by exporting opium into the Chinese Empire and by investing in real estate in and around New York City in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was the first prominent member of the Astor family and the first multi-millionaire in the United States. Born in Germany, Astor immigrated to England as a teenager and worked as a musical instrument manufacturer, then moved to the United States after the American Revolutionary War. Seeing the westward expansion of the population, he entered the fur trade and built a monopoly, managing a business empire that extended to the Great Lakes and north into British North America, and later to the western United States, the far West Coast and the Pacific Ocean. After demand declined with changing European tastes in beaver-fur hats and clothing, he left the fur trade in 1830 and diversified by investing in real estate.
