Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (born May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York) is the co-founder of Facebook and its parent company Meta Platforms, where he serves as chairman, chief executive officer and controlling shareholder. He grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York, the son of a dentist and a psychiatrist, and attended Ardsley High School before transferring to Phillips Exeter Academy, where he captained the fencing team. Zuckerberg was a programming prodigy. At about eleven he built "ZuckNet", a program that let the computers in the family home and his father's dental office talk to each other, and in high school he built the Synapse Media Player, a music player that used machine learning to learn a listener's habits. He entered Harvard in 2002, studying psychology and computer science, and in February 2004 launched Facebook from his dorm with roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. He left Harvard, and took the company public in May 2012 while keeping majority control. He became the world's youngest self-made billionaire in 2008 at the age of 23 and has ranked among the wealthiest people ever since; Forbes estimated his net worth at US$220 billion as of December 2025. He has directed large donations, including through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. His early career and legal disputes were dramatized in the 2010 film The Social Network. His rapid rise has also brought sustained political and legal scrutiny, including lawsuits over the creation and ownership of the site and over user privacy.
