Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born February 14, 1942) is an American businessman and politician, the majority owner and co-founder of Bloomberg L.P., which he led as CEO from 1981 to 2001 and again from 2014 to 2023. He served as the 109th mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013. A centibillionaire, he was worth $109.4 billion as of March 2026, making him the 18th richest person in the world. Bloomberg grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, and graduated from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School. He began his career at the securities brokerage Salomon Brothers before forming his own company in 1981. Bloomberg L.P. became a financial information, software and media firm known for the Bloomberg Terminal, and he spent the next twenty years as chairman and CEO. He has signed the Giving Pledge and, as of 2025, had given away $24.5 billion to philanthropic causes; after a brief stint as a full-time philanthropist, he resumed the CEO role at Bloomberg L.P. by the end of 2014. A lifelong Democrat until 2001, he switched to the Republican Party to run for mayor, became an Independent in 2007 and rejoined the Democrats in 2018, then ran an unsuccessful campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
