In 1981, a fresh IIM-Ahmedabad graduate called Satish Mehta borrowed three lakh rupees from a bank — roughly thirty-five thousand dollars at the time — and started a pharmaceutical company in Pune called Emcure. Namita Thapar, his daughter, now runs part of it. She was born Namita Mehta in Pune on 21 March 1977. She qualified as a chartered accountant with the ICAI, then took an MBA at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, finishing in 2001. Her first job out of it was in the United States, as business finance head at Guidant Corporation, the medical device maker. She came back to India to join Emcure as its Chief Financial Officer, and is today its Executive Director — one of four key executives alongside her father, who remains CEO and Managing Director, chairman Berjis Desai and her brother Sunil Mehta. The company she helps run is no longer a small one. Emcure is listed on both Indian exchanges as EMCURE, makes tablets, hard and soft-gel capsules and injectables across gynaecology, cardiovascular, oncology, blood therapeutics, HIV antivirals and other anti-infectives, and reported revenue of ₹7,963 crore for the year to 31 March 2025, with a net profit of ₹707 crore. It employed more than 11,000 people as of January 2022. Its history includes licensing deals with Bristol-Myers Squibb and Gilead in 2006 under their global access programmes, and a 2012 agreement with Roche to manufacture the cancer drugs Herceptin and Mabthera in India. Outside Emcure, Thapar has become one of the most recognisable investors in the country. She has appeared as a 'shark' on Sony Entertainment Television's Shark Tank India across all five seasons since 2021, and has invested in more than a hundred companies. She also founded the Thapar Entrepreneur Academy, and won the Economic Times '40 Under Forty' award in 2018. She is married to Vikas Thapar and has two sons.
