About Palmer Luckey: Co-founder of Anduril Industries and Founder of Oculus
Palmer Freeman Luckey (born September 19, 1992, in Long Beach, California) is an American entrepreneur and co-founder of the defense technology company Anduril Industries. He was the founder of Oculus VR and designer of the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset widely credited with reviving the virtual reality industry. In 2017 he co-founded Anduril, a military technology company focused on autonomous drones and sensors. Forbes ranked him number 22 on its 2016 list of America's Richest Entrepreneurs Under 40 and, as of September 2026, values his net worth at $6 billion. Luckey grew up in Long Beach with three younger sisters; his father worked at a car dealership. Homeschooled by his mother, he took sailing lessons and developed an intense interest in electronics and engineering, taking courses at Golden West College and Long Beach City College from the age of 14 or 15 and later at Cal State Long Beach, where he majored in journalism and was online editor of the student newspaper. As a child and teenager he experimented with complex electrical projects including railguns, Tesla coils and lasers, some of which caused serious injuries, and built a PC gaming rig worth tens of thousands of dollars with a six-monitor setup. In 2009 he founded the ModRetro Forums with a friend, an online community for "portabilization", the hobby of turning old game consoles and PCs into self-contained portable devices.
