Radhika Apte was born in a hospital where both her parents were resident doctors — the Christian Medical College in Vellore, on 7 September 1985. Her father, Charudutta Apte, went on to become a neurosurgeon and the chairman of Sahyadri Hospital in Pune. Her education was less conventional than that suggests. After a spell at a regular school in Pune she was homeschooled alongside four friends by their own parents, who all lived in the same building and had decided against the standard system. She has described it as liberating. She also trained in Kathak for eight years under Rohini Bhate, and eventually took a degree in Economics and Mathematics from Fergusson College. The first attempt at Mumbai did not work. She was doing theatre for eight to ten thousand rupees a month, living as a paying guest in Goregaon, and it wore her down enough that she went home to Pune. Somewhere in that stretch she was offered a role in a big Hindi production and then, in her own account, dropped from it for being too fat. What changed it was London — a period she has called life-changing for how differently people worked there, and where she met the musician Benedict Taylor, whom she married in 2012. She came back, agreed to try Mumbai again, and this time it held. Her first Indian release was the Marathi film Gho Mala Asala Hawa in 2009, and her first lead the Bengali drama Antaheen the same year, alongside Sharmila Tagore, Aparna Sen and Rahul Bose. Then a long, deliberately scattered run across languages — Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi — before 2015 changed the arithmetic. Six releases in eight months, three of which mattered: a six-day supporting part in Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur that critics singled out anyway, the sex comedy Hunterrr, and Ketan Mehta's Manjhi – The Mountain Man. The press started calling her Bollywood's new go-to actor. Then came the run that defined her. Phobia and Parched in 2016, Rajinikanth's Kabali the same year. And in 2018, three Netflix titles in a single year — the anthology Lust Stories, the thriller series Sacred Games, and the horror mini-series Ghoul — plus Pad Man and Andhadhun. For Lust Stories she became the first Indian actress ever nominated for an International Emmy. She played the Second World War SOE agent Noor Inayat Khan in the American film A Call to Spy in 2019, led Netflix's Raat Akeli Hai in 2020 and Monica, O My Darling in 2022, and in 2024 took the lead in Sister Midnight, which brought her a British Independent Film Award nomination.
