A kid who couldn't afford instruments at his local Guitar Center grew up to cover Slayer on banjo, drum in a Billboard-charting comedy band, and set a Guinness World Record for the largest guitar pedalboard ever built.

About Rob Scallon: American Musician & YouTuber

Rob Scallon was born in Champaign, Illinois and raised in Arlington Heights, where he and his friends would visit the local Guitar Center to play instruments they couldn't afford. Given a nylon-string classical guitar as a gift, he wrote his first songs on it and played drums as a teenager in a metal band called Gas Mask Catalogue. He began uploading to YouTube in February 2007 and built a following covering heavy metal songs on traditionally non-metal instruments — his banjo covers of Slayer's 'Raining Blood' and Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' went viral, and his banjo take on Slipknot's 'Psychosocial' featured a cameo from Corey Taylor. He plays drums in Hank Green and the Perfect Strangers, whose 2014 debut album reached number 3 on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart, and co-runs two music projects with fellow musician Andrew Huang: the one-day-album band First of October and the show Sonic Boom. Scallon has released signature guitar lines with Chapman Guitars and, since 2022, Schecter. In 2019, with Sweetwater Sound, he set a Guinness World Record for the largest guitar effects pedalboard — 319 pedals across 34 pedalboards and more than 500 feet of cable. In 2021 he launched GuitarQuest, an online guitar-learning course.
