About Robert F. Smith: Founder and CEO of Vista Equity Partners
Robert Frederick Smith (born December 1, 1962, in Denver, Colorado) is an American businessman, the founder, chairman and CEO of the private equity firm Vista Equity Partners, with a net worth exceeding US$10.6 billion as of 2025. From 2000 to 2015 Smith engaged in tax evasion, and in 2020 he settled one of the largest individual tax fraud cases in United States history, agreeing to repay $139 million and to testify against the financial advisors he had hired. Smith was the fourth generation of his family born in Colorado. His parents, Dr. William Robert Smith, an elementary school principal, and Dr. Sylvia Myrna Smith, principal of George Washington High School, both held PhDs in education. He grew up in a predominantly African-American middle-class neighborhood in East Denver; as an infant his mother carried him to the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. He attended East High School, class of 1981. While in high school he applied for an internship at Bell Labs but was told the program was for college students; he persisted, calling each Monday for five months, and when an MIT student failed to show he got the position, spending the summer developing a reliability test for semiconductors. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University. Sources: English Wikipedia (Robert F. Smith (investor), accessed September 2026).
