About Sophia Amoruso: Founder of Nasty Gal and Girlboss Media

Sophia Christina Amoruso (born April 20, 1984, in San Diego) is an American businesswoman who founded Nasty Gal, a women's fast fashion retailer named one of "the fastest growing companies" by Inc. magazine in 2012. In 2016 Forbes named her one of the richest self-made women in the world, but that same year Nasty Gal filed for bankruptcy. In 2017 she founded Girlboss Media, a company that creates content for millennial women to progress personally and professionally, and her 2014 autobiography #GIRLBOSS was adapted into the Netflix series Girlboss. Amoruso grew up in the suburbs of San Diego, of Greek, Italian and Portuguese American descent, and was raised in the Greek Orthodox church. She wanted to leave home because her parents did not get along, and after being diagnosed in adolescence with depression and ADHD she dropped out of school and began homeschooling. Her first teenage job was at a Subway restaurant, followed by various odd jobs. Sources: English Wikipedia (Sophia Amoruso, accessed September 2026).
