About Tony Robbins: Author, Coach and Founder of Robbins Research International
Anthony Jay Robbins (born Anthony J. Mahavorić on February 29, 1960, in North Hollywood, California) is an American author, coach and motivational speaker known for his seminars and self-help books, including Unlimited Power (1986) and Awaken the Giant Within (1991). He has also appeared on television, owns wellness companies and is active in philanthropy. Robbins was the eldest of three children, and his parents divorced when he was seven. His mother remarried several times, including to Jim Robbins, a former semi-professional baseball player who legally adopted Anthony when he was 12. He is of Croatian descent on both sides of his family. He attended Glendora High School, where he grew ten inches in a year, a growth spurt later attributed to a pituitary tumor. He has described his home life as "chaotic" and "abusive"; at 17 he left home and never returned, worked as a janitor and did not attend college. At 17 he began working for the motivational speaker and author Jim Rohn. He went on to learn neuro-linguistic programming and started teaching self-improvement seminars himself, later learning to firewalk and incorporating it into his events. In May 1995 Robbins Research International settled with the Federal Trade Commission over alleged violations of the agency's Franchise Rule, without admitting to having violated it.
