About Warren Buffett: Chairman Emeritus of Berkshire Hathaway
Warren Edward Buffett (born August 30, 1930, in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American investor and philanthropist, the chairman emeritus and former CEO of the conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway and one of the best-known investors in the world. The second of three children and the only son of Congressman Howard Buffett, he developed an interest in business and investing in his youth. He entered the Wharton School in 1947, graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln at 20, and then studied at Columbia Business School, where he shaped his approach around the value investing pioneered by Benjamin Graham. After working with Graham, Buffett created Buffett Partnership Ltd. in 1956. His investment vehicle eventually acquired the textile manufacturer Berkshire Hathaway, whose name he applied to a diversified holding company, and he became its chairman and majority shareholder in 1970. Charlie Munger joined him as vice-chairman in 1978. From 1970 to 2026 Buffett presided over Berkshire as chairman and largest shareholder, making it one of America's foremost holding companies. Global media call him the "Oracle" or "Sage" of Omaha, and he is known for adhering to value investing and frugality despite his wealth. Buffett has pledged to give away 99 percent of his fortune, and until 2026 his giving went primarily to the Gates Foundation. In 2010 he founded The Giving Pledge with Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, in which billionaires commit to giving away at least half their fortunes. According to Forbes, his net worth stood at US$148.9 billion as of January 2026, making him the ninth-richest person in the world.
