About Yvon Chouinard: Founder of Patagonia
Yvon Chouinard (born November 9, 1938) is an American rock climber, environmentalist and businessman whose company, Patagonia, sells outdoor products, outerwear and food. Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2023. Chouinard's father was a French Canadian handyman, mechanic and plumber. In 1947 the Catholic family moved from Lewiston, Maine, to Southern California. His early climbing partners included Royal Robbins and Tom Frost. A Sierra Club member, he founded the Southern California Falconry Club in his youth, and his investigations of falcon aeries led him to rock climbing. To save money and adapt to the way he climbed, he taught himself blacksmithing to make his own climbing tools, and eventually started a business. He was one of the leading climbers of the "Golden Age of Yosemite Climbing" and a protagonist of the 2014 film Valley Uprising. He took part in the first ascent of the North America Wall in 1964, using no fixed ropes, and the next year he and T. M. Herbert improved on the style of earlier ascents with the Muir Wall on El Capitan, becoming the most articulate advocate of the importance of style in modern rock climbing. In 1961 he visited Western Canada with Fred Beckey and made several important first ascents, including the North Face of Mount Edith Cavell, the Beckey-Chouinard Route on South Howser Tower and the North Face of Mount Sir Donald, which opened his eyes to applying Yosemite big-wall techniques to alpine mountaineering.
