Mahindra & Mahindra
Verified CompanyRise — from Jeeps under licence to India's best-selling SUVs and the world's largest tractor business
It started in 1945 as a steel trading firm called Mahindra & Mohammed. When Mohammed left for Pakistan, the family couldn't afford to reprint stationery reading 'M&M' — so they became Mahindra & Mahindra. Today it is India's largest SUV maker and the world's largest tractor manufacturer by volume.
About Mahindra & Mahindra
Mahindra & Mahindra is named after a typo nobody could afford to fix. The company was founded on 2 October 1945 in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed — a steel trading firm started by the brothers Kailash Chandra and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra with Malik Ghulam Muhammad. In 1948 Ghulam Mohammed left for the newly created Pakistan. The Mahindras were left holding stationery and a company stamp that read M&M, and no money to reprint them. There were two Mahindra brothers in the business. So the company became Mahindra & Mahindra, and the initials stayed accurate. Steel gave way to vehicles almost immediately. The company began assembling the Willys Jeep under licence, and for a generation of Indians 'Mahindra' simply meant Jeep. It started building the Jeep CJ3 in 1954, light commercial vehicles from 1965, and tractors soon after — a combination that still defines it. When American Motors bought Jeep in 1970, and Chrysler bought AMC in 1987, Mahindra kept building them under licence through each change of owner. The tractor business grew into something few people outside India realise. The acquisition of Punjab Tractors in 2007 — later merged in as the Swaraj division — made Mahindra the largest tractor manufacturer in the world by volume, a position it has held since. It has bought its way further into agriculture repeatedly: a third of Japan's Mitsubishi Agricultural Machinery in 2015, the Turkish makers Hisarlar and Erkunt in 2017, and stakes in agri-technology firms in Canada and Switzerland. The vehicle side has been just as acquisitive, and rather more mixed. Mahindra took a majority stake in South Korea's SsangYong in 2011 and walked away from it in 2020. It bought 76.06% of the Italian design house Pininfarina with Tech Mahindra in December 2015 for €168 million, and now sells electric hypercars under Automobili Pininfarina. It bought Peugeot Motocycles, took control of REVA and turned it into Mahindra Electric, and briefly ran a joint venture with Ford that the pandemic ended in 2021. What it is best known for now is SUVs. The Thar, the Scorpio, the Bolero, the XUV700 and the Born Electric range — BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S — have made Mahindra the leading SUV maker in India by revenue market share. In FY2026 the auto business sold more than 11.17 lakh vehicles, up 19%, overtaking Tata Motors in SUV sales; the Thar and Thar Roxx together accounted for 126,261 of them, and the three Born Electric SUVs for 43,649 — a 442% jump on a small base. For the year ended March 2026 the company reported consolidated revenue of about ₹1.99 lakh crore, up 25%, and profit after tax of ₹17,099 crore, up 35%, holding roughly a quarter of India's SUV revenue market share. It employs between 67,700 and 68,600 people. The chairman is Anand Mahindra — grandson of Jagdish Chandra Mahindra, one of the two brothers left with the M&M stamp — and Anish Shah is Managing Director and CEO. It has also quietly moved beyond vehicles. In December 2023 it took a 60.01% stake in Emergent Solren for ₹288.05 crore, putting it into solar power generation. The Mahindra Group around it spans IT, finance, hospitality, real estate and logistics; Mahindra & Mahindra is the piece that builds things that move. Our Services
SUVs — Thar, Scorpio, Bolero, XUV700
The core of the business and the reason Mahindra leads India's SUV market by revenue share. The Thar and Thar Roxx alone sold 126,261 units in FY2026 — 19% of the company's model mix — while the Scorpio, Bolero and XUV700 carry the volume across rural, urban and premium buyers respectively.
Born Electric — BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S
Mahindra's dedicated electric SUV platform, built as its own architecture rather than a converted petrol car. The three Born Electric models dispatched 43,649 units in FY2026, a 442% increase on the previous year, taking around 7% of Mahindra's total SUV sales.
Tractors and Farm Machinery
Mahindra Tractors, together with the Swaraj division acquired from Punjab Tractors in 2007, makes the company the largest tractor manufacturer in the world by volume. The farm equipment sector also spans implements, sprayers and agri-technology, with operations in India, Japan, Turkey and Finland.
Commercial Vehicles and Pickups
Light and heavy commercial vehicles through the Mahindra Truck and Bus Division, plus the pickup range that grew out of the Bolero and Scorpio platforms and sells widely in Africa, South Asia and Australia.
Design and Premium Mobility — Pininfarina
Mahindra and Tech Mahindra acquired 76.06% of the Italian design house Pininfarina in December 2015 for €168 million. Automobili Pininfarina now builds electric hypercars, and the design studio works for clients well beyond the group.
Two-Wheelers and Classic Legends
Mahindra entered two-wheelers by taking over Kinetic Motors in 2008 and later acquired Peugeot Motocycles. Through Classic Legends it revived the Jawa, Yezdi and BSA motorcycle marques, putting three heritage brands back into production.
