About Royal Enfield

In November 1891, two men bought a needle factory. Bob Walker Smith and Albert Eadie had no particular interest in needles. What George Townsend & Co. of Redditch had that they wanted was a workshop that had just started making bicycles. Two years later the pair won a contract to supply precision parts to the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield — a prestigious enough order that they renamed the entire business after it and called their first bicycle the Enfield. The following year the bicycles became Royal Enfields, and a trademark was coined that the company has never let go of: 'Made Like A Gun'. The first Royal Enfield motorcycle followed in 1901, designed by Bob Walker Smith with the Frenchman Jules Gobiet and shown at the Stanley Cycle Show in London. It carried a 1 3/4 hp engine mounted ahead of the steering head, a long rawhide belt driving the rear wheel, and a price tag of £50. Nobody in that hall could have guessed that 125 years later the badge would be the oldest motorcycle brand in continuous production anywhere on earth — or that its home would be Chennai. That move happened almost by accident. In the early 1950s, newly independent India needed a rugged patrol motorcycle for its border forces and chose the 350cc Bullet, ordering 800 of them. Shipping British-built machines halfway around the world made little sense for long, so in 1955 Redditch partnered with Madras Motors to build them locally. Enfield India was born, and by 1962 every component was being made in India. The British parent eventually faded away. The Indian one did not: in 1994 the company was merged into Eicher Motors, and in the years that followed the decision was taken that defines the modern business — instead of quietly killing off a loss-making, leaky, unfashionable old motorcycle, rebuild it properly and sell the feeling it gives people. That bet has become one of the most striking turnarounds in Indian manufacturing. In the financial year ended 31 March 2026, Royal Enfield sold 1,227,977 motorcycles — up 22.4% on the previous year and the second straight year past a million. Eicher Motors reported consolidated revenue from operations of ₹23,407.6 crore (about US$2.44 billion) and profit of ₹5,515.2 crore. In the June 2026 quarter the company went further still, with its highest-ever quarterly sales of 332,940 motorcycles, and roughly 85% of India's mid-size motorcycle segment by SIAM's count. The machines themselves are still built in Tamil Nadu. Four plants — Tiruvottiyur, Oragadam, Vallam Vadagal and Cheyyar — feed a global network, supported by seven CKD assembly facilities abroad in Bangladesh, Nepal, Brazil (two), Thailand, Argentina and Colombia, and by two technology centres: one in Chennai, one in Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire. Retail runs to more than 2,074 stores across Indian cities and towns and nearly 1,212 stores in over 80 countries, of which 356 are exclusive Royal Enfield stores. Exports account for 12.3% of turnover. The product line is deliberately broad but never complicated. The 350cc heritage bikes — Classic 350, Bullet 350, Goan Classic 350, Hunter 350, Meteor 350 — remain the volume core. The 648cc parallel-twins that began with the Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 have since grown into the Super Meteor 650, Shotgun 650, Bear 650, Classic 650 and, in 2026, a twin-cylinder Bullet 650 in Cannon Black and Battleship Blue. The Sherpa-engined Himalayan 450 has become an adventure bike in its own right, passing 38,000 units of annual sales outside India alone, with the Guerrilla 450 roadster and Scram 440 crossover sharing its DNA. In April 2026 the company did something it had never done before: it sold an electric motorcycle. The Flying Flea C6 arrived under a new 'city+' electric mobility brand named after the WD/RE Flying Flea, a tiny 1940s two-stroke light enough to be dropped by parachute alongside airborne troops. It launched with the brand's first dedicated store in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, and deliveries began that June in a phased, city-by-city rollout. 2026 is also the 125th year. Royal Enfield marked it by unveiling a 'World Origin Site' plaque at Redditch, with five generations of motorcycles lined along Enfield Road and a 125th Anniversary Edition of the Classic 650, and by flagging off its biggest-ever Himalayan Odyssey. Brand Finance ranked it the world's third strongest automobile brand in 2026. What comes next is concrete. On 29 July 2026 the Eicher Motors board approved ₹1,225 crore for Phase I of a greenfield plant at Tada, Andhra Pradesh — the company's first motorcycle factory outside Tamil Nadu — which at full utilisation adds 450,000 motorcycles a year and is expected to be complete during FY2029-30, within a phased investment of roughly ₹2,500 crore. The business is led by B. Govindarajan, Managing Director of Eicher Motors Limited and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Enfield. Its operations are certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 50001:2018, and the company has committed to 100% renewable electricity by 2030. As of 31 March 2026 it employed 3,506 people directly and engaged 19,949 workers. But the number the company itself keeps coming back to is not on any of those pages: the riders who turn up at Motoverse in Goa every year, and the ones who ride the Himalayan Odyssey over some of the highest passes on the planet, on motorcycles that were designed to be simple enough to fix by the roadside. The 350s — Classic, Bullet, Hunter, Meteor & Goan Classic

This is where most Royal Enfield stories begin. The 349cc single-cylinder platform carries the Classic 350 and Bullet 350 for riders who want the thump and the chrome, the Hunter 350 for city streets, the Meteor 350 for long straight roads, and the Goan Classic 350 for anyone who thinks a motorcycle should look like a holiday. Together these machines are the reason roughly 85% of India's mid-size motorcycle market wears this badge.

The 650 Twins — Interceptor, Continental GT, Super Meteor, Shotgun, Bear, Classic & Bullet 650

Built around a 648cc parallel-twin, this is the range that made Royal Enfield credible in Europe, the Americas and Australia — markets where nobody had heard the word 'Bullet' but everybody understood an honest twin-cylinder motorcycle at an honest price. The line grew again in 2026 with the Bullet 650, launched across India, EMEA and ANZ in Cannon Black and Battleship Blue.

Adventure & Scrambler — Himalayan 450, Guerrilla 450, Scram 440

The Himalayan was born out of riding rather than a design brief: a motorcycle built for the world's highest passes, then sold to everyone else. The current Himalayan 450 runs the liquid-cooled Sherpa engine and has crossed 38,000 units of annual sales outside India alone. The Guerrilla 450 puts the same engine on a roadster, and the Scram 440 is the crossover for riders whose adventure starts at a broken city junction.

Flying Flea — City+ Electric Mobility

Royal Enfield's electric brand borrows its name from the WD/RE 'Flying Flea', a tiny 1940s two-stroke light enough to be dropped by parachute with airborne troops. The Flying Flea C6 launched in April 2026 alongside the brand's first dedicated store in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, with deliveries beginning that June in a phased, city-by-city rollout — an electric motorcycle that still insists on feeling like a motorcycle.

Apparel, Accessories & Make It Yours

Helmets, riding jackets, gloves and luggage, a genuine-parts catalogue, and the Make It Yours configurator that lets a buyer specify the exact motorcycle they want before it leaves the factory. For a brand whose customers routinely keep a bike for a decade, this is not merchandise — it is the second half of the product.

Ownership, Service & the Ride Itself

Service through 2,074+ stores in India and nearly 1,212 internationally, Borderless Warranty for riders who cross frontiers, extended warranty and Ride Sure plans, REOwn certified pre-owned motorcycles, Tripper Pod and Tripper Dash navigation, plus organised tours and rentals. And then the part no spreadsheet captures: Motoverse in Goa every year, and the Himalayan Odyssey, which in 2026 was the biggest ever run.
