Adarsh Gourav auditioned for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2003 and was rejected. He auditioned for L'il Champs in 2007 and was rejected again. Fourteen years later he was nominated for a BAFTA. He was born on 8 July 1994 in Jamshedpur, then in Bihar and now in Jharkhand, into a Telugu-speaking family — his father Satishnarayana Bhagavatula from Srikakulam, his mother Padmavati from Vizianagaram. He studied at Loyola School in Jamshedpur, and when his father, an employee of the Central Bank of India, was transferred in 2007, the family moved to Mumbai. He was singing at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival that year when somebody asked whether he had thought about acting. He said yes, mostly because he liked the idea of being on television. It took a year of auditions to get anything. What he got was the part of the teenage Rizwan — young Shah Rukh Khan — in My Name Is Khan in 2010. He had also spent nine years learning Hindustani classical music under a series of gurus, which is not a detail most actors carry. After school at Narsee Monjee College and a stretch of small parts, including an antagonist in Sridevi's Mom, he stopped and went back to training at The Drama School Mumbai in 2016. What followed was steady work rather than stardom: Prince Tarquin in the NCPA's production of Lucrece, Amazon's Die Trying, TVF's Hostel Daze, and Deepa Mehta's Netflix series Leila. Then, after several months with no acting work at all, he was called to audition for The White Tiger. As Balram Halwai — the chauffeur who narrates his own escape from servitude in Ramin Bahrani's adaptation of Aravind Adiga's novel — he was, in the words of the Evening Standard, nuanced and utterly engaging. Variety called the performance a small marvel; The Telegraph called it the definition of a breakthrough. The nominations that followed were the ones Indian actors almost never get: the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. He has stayed deliberately unpredictable since. Guns & Gulaabs for Raj & DK and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan both landed in 2023 — of the latter, NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee wrote that Gourav made the biggest impact in the film. That May he also voiced one of three leads in Audible's Desi Down Under alongside Taaruk Raina and Prajakta Koli. He took his work to the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, and in 2026 carried his first major leading role in Bejoy Nambiar's survival thriller Tu Yaa Main, playing an aspiring rapper from a Mumbai suburb.
