Anupam Mittal's biggest company started because he had a bad experience with a matrimonial consultant. He was born in Mumbai on 23 December 1971 to Bhagwati Devi and Gopal Krishna Mittal, went to school at Jai Hind College, and then to Boston College in Massachusetts, where he took an MBA in operations and strategic management. He worked as a product manager at MicroStrategy in the United States, and it was the matchmaking experience — a personal one, not a market study — that gave him the idea. In 1997 he started Sagai.com. It was the first online matrimonial portal of its kind in India, and it is now Shaadi.com, the flagship of People Group, which he still runs as founder and CEO. This was 1997: broadband did not exist in India, and the notion that families would arrange marriages over the internet was not obvious to anyone. He kept building around it. Mauj Mobile was India's first mobile gaming company. Makaan.com was one of the country's first property marketplaces. From 2006 to 2007 he was co-founder and chairperson of the Internet and Mobile Association of India, the industry's main body, and he still sits on its governing council. The second career is investing. He was one of the earliest backers of Ola Cabs, and has put money into more than 250 startups across clean technology, consumer internet, mobile, healthcare and SaaS — among them BigBasket, Rapido, Rupeek, WhatFix, Agnikul, Animall, Basic Home Loan and Interactive Avenues. Business Standard named him India's top angel investor in both 2014 and 2015, for investing in 25 and then 34 startups in a single year; Forbes listed him among the eight most prominent angel investors in India in 2016. Since 2021 he has been a 'shark' on Shark Tank India, where his cheque-writing is a matter of public record — around ₹5.4 crore across 25 businesses in the first season, a similar figure in the second, and close to ₹8.05 crore in the third. He has also, unusually for a technology founder, acted in and produced two Bollywood films — 99 and Flavors — both directed by his friends Raj & DK. He holds the Karmaveer Chakra Award for entrepreneurship for social change, and has appeared on The Week's list of the 50 most powerful people in India. He married the model Aanchal Kumar in Jaipur in 2013; they have a daughter, Alyssa.
