About Nithin Kamath
Between January 2001 and January 2004, Nithin Kamath traded shares during the day and worked nights as a senior tele-sales associate at a call centre. The call centre was what paid for the trading. He was born on 5 October 1979 in Shivamogga, Karnataka, into a Konkani family, and studied at the Bangalore Institute of Technology. He started trading at seventeen, initially running his father's account. From 1997 to 2004 he was a self-employed proprietary trader — which is a formal way of saying he was on his own — and from 2004 to 2010 he worked as a sub-broker at Kamath Associates, a Reliance Money franchise, advising portfolios and trading his own book. In August 2010 he and his younger brother Nikhil founded Zerodha. The idea was almost annoyingly simple: charge a flat fee per trade instead of a percentage of it. Indian broking had never worked that way, and the effect on the cost of investing in India was closer to a repricing than a discount. Zerodha is now a member of the NSE, BSE and MCX, offering equity, derivatives, currency, commodity, mutual fund and bond trading through its own software — Kite for trading, Coin for mutual funds, Console for reporting, and Varsity, a free investor-education library that the company has never charged for. As of May 2024 it had 7.5 million active customers registered with the NSE, making it the second-largest stockbroker in the country. For FY2025 it reported revenue of ₹8,847 crore and a net profit of ₹4,237 crore. The part that is genuinely rare: it was bootstrapped, took no venture funding, and remains 100% owned by the Kamath family. In 2015 he started Rainmatter, a fund and incubator that backs fintech and, later, climate and health companies — run less like a venture fund than a long-horizon balance-sheet investment. He also co-founded the asset manager True Beacon with Nikhil, who runs it.
