About Peyush Bansal
Peyush Bansal's first company was registered in his parents' house. He was born in New Delhi on 26 April 1985 to Bal Kishan and Kiran Bansal, went to Don Bosco School, and then to McGill University in Montreal for an electrical engineering degree. A job at Microsoft in the United States followed, and then he quit it — first to try selling eyewear online in America, then to come home entirely. Back in India in 2007 he started SearchMyCampus.com, a classifieds site for college students. By June 2008 it had twenty employees, and he registered a parent company, Valyoo Technologies, at the family home in Greater Kailash, Delhi. A second venture, Flyrr, was scrapped in 2010. Under Valyoo he then launched four e-commerce sites — Lenskart, WatchKart, JewelsKart and BagsKart — modelled, on an early investor's advice, on Titan's multi-category approach. By the end of 2014, three of them were dead. He had shut WatchKart, JewelsKart and BagsKart to put everything behind eyewear. In 2015 Valyoo Technologies was renamed Lenskart Solutions. What that focus produced is a vertically integrated eyewear company that designs, manufactures, distributes and retails its own glasses: more than 2,000 stores, a plant at Bhiwadi in Rajasthan with capacity for 50 million units a year, and in-house brands including Vincent Chase, John Jacobs, Aqualens and Lenskart Air. He founded it with Amit Chaudhary in 2010; Sumeet Kapahi joined as the third co-founder in 2011. The cap table reads like a roll call — IDG Ventures, SoftBank's Vision Fund, KKR, Temasek, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, ChrysCapital, Fidelity, PremjiInvest, and Ratan Tata personally. In 2022 Lenskart bought a majority stake in the Japanese eyewear chain Owndays in a deal valuing it around $400 million, and in 2025 took 80% of the Spanish brand Meller for over €40 million. In October 2025 Bansal led the company's initial public offering, which raised over ₹7,200 crore. Since 2021 he has also been one of the investors on Sony's Shark Tank India, which is where most of India now recognises him from. In April 2026 an internal Lenskart dress-code document became public and drew significant criticism on social media over how it treated visible religious symbols; the company faced sustained backlash over the policy.
